Activities For The Blind
There are numerous activities that can be explored specially for the blind. Recreational pursuits are just as important and fulfilling for the visually impaired as they are for those with sight. The blind are able to enjoy creating art, the Internet, sculpting, woodworking, sports and more. There have been notable achievements for the blind including that of Erik Weihenmeyer. In 2001, he was the first blind person to climb Mt. Everest. This is something many people with full sight cannot accomplish.
Of course, not every blind person wants to go mountain climbing or create a masterpiece. Some enjoy sedentary activities like reading and enjoying television. All of this and more is possible, thanks to the great strides made and innovations developed to assist the visually impaired. There are computer games for the blind, an American Blind Bowling Association, blind golf organizations, theater performed by blind actors and a wide variety of other resources and organizations. Perhaps the most useful solution developed for the sight impaired is Braille.
Braille was invented by and named for a Frenchman named Louis Braille. Born in 1809, Louis was a student at the National Institute for Blind Youth in France. During his time there, at the age of 15, he developed an experimental alphabet decoded using the tips of the fingers. This innovation was inspired by a French military technique of night writing where messages could be deciphered on the battlefield in pitch black conditions without the need for light. It should be noted that Braille is a code used to read languages such as English, French and Spanish but is not itself classified as a language.
Today, there are is an enormous selection of Braille reading materials available. For young blind children or recently blind adults learning Braille, there are educational resources to teach from a basic level. Braille is taught and learned much in the same way a sighted student would first learn to read. As skill and mastery is achieved users of Braille can read anything they desire, just as literate adults are able to do.
Whether reading, enjoying favorite television programs, creating works of art or participating in sports it should be known that activities for the blind are necessary parts of living a full life and are readily accessible. No one should feel as if they cannot do what they used to do before their blindness occurred. While there is certainly and adjustment period and a learning curve for the newly blind, there a great deal of help available. The American Foundation for the Blind, or AFB, can help you learn more about blindness and activities for the visually impaired.
